Auszug aus der "Great Rock Discography" von Martin C. Strong:
Formed: Jacksonville, Florida, USA...1966 initially as My Backyard by Ronnie van Zant (vocals) who carefully hand picked a line-up of Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Bob Burns (drums) and Larry Junstrom (bass) to realise his boyhood dream of creating an American equivalent to the Rolling Stones.
1977 LP "Street Survivors" their best release since "Second helping" (1974). The song's lyrics and the album cover art (featuring the band surrounded by flames) were to take on a chilling new ressonance when, on October 20 1977, en route to Baton Rouge, the aircraft carrying band and crew plummeted from sky after both its engines failed. Van Zant was killed on impact, as were Steve and Cassie Gaines, and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick. The remaining passengers were all seriously injured and the details of the crash were horrific, the effects of the tragedy still resonating to this day. The remaining members decided to disband Lynard Skynard, although "Street survivors"had become their biggest selling album ever, the remnants of Skynard forming the Rossington-Collins-Band.....
Später wurde daraus noch Rossington, dann Allen Collins Band. Ein Remake von Lynard Skynard kam 1988 und existiert noch heute.
